Welcome fellow Star Wars fans. Being unhappy with the way things turned out in Episode 8: The Last Jedi I tried to come up with a plot for the next movie that could set things right again. The story is not fleshed out, I just wanted to present a framework that fixes most problems fans are criticizing (Can´t undo the out-of-fuel story, sorry :-)). The backstory should be revealed during the new movie, the plot could easily be expanded with more characters/sidestories. Please enjoy!
Ren is a planet in the unknown regions where a group of sith sorcerers hid during the time of Darth Bane. This CIRCLE OF REN never challenged the rule of two by claiming the title of Lord of the Sith, but kept hidden and trained KNIGHTS OF REN to build up an army of followers to choose their successors on the Circle from and to expand their territory. They never were powerful enough beings on their own, but could lend their combined strenght to one individual of their circle if need be. Thousand years later, after the death of the last Darthes Sidious and Vader, they gained even more power in the dark side and decided to finally step up and gain control of the galaxy. Snoke was sent to take control of the remains of the Empire and rebuilt it with the resources the Circle had been gathering in all those years.
Luke Skywalker was the only real threat to the Circle, so they used sith alchemy and their combined power to cloud his mind and alter his personality and memories. After Snoke had successfully turned Ben Solo to the dark side they made Luke try to kill his nephew, but he was able to restrain himself and was overpowered by Ben, because he didn´t fight back. The destruction of his Jedi academy and the death of his students gave Luke the willpower to withstand the Sith sorcery long enough to change the memory of his daughter, to cloak her from being recognized by people who knew her and to hide her on Jakku. Then he hid a map to Ahch-To and went into exile, where he succumbed to the mind-trick of the Circle. The Circle meanwhile tried to locate and kill Skywalker, because it took a lot of their strength to uphold the control over Luke´s mind.
When Luke and Rey finally met he was unable to recognize her but had the feeling he knew her. ("why are YOU here"). After Snoke´s death the Circle´s power was diminished enough for Luke to realize his beloved sister was in danger and help the resistance on Crait. Returning his consciousness to Ahch-To he was fatigued, but saw the twin moons of the planet and remembered his youth on Tatooine. In this very moment, when he was very calm and content, he was suddenly pulled into the world between worlds, so Leia and Rey felt he was gone.
The Circle sends a new representative to claim leadership of the New Order and punish Kylo for his betrayal. He/She quickly deposes Kylo and leaves him to die. Kylo, who didn´t know about the origins of Snoke and the Knights of Ren, realizes his mistakes and tries to make amends. This change of heart makes it possible for Anakin´s ghost to appear and tell Kylo about his redemption. He also tells Kylo to search for a way to bring back Luke. Therefore he needs to find force-users that can lead him to the world between worlds (maybe Ahsoka or Ezra). Kylo barely survives his wounds and sets out for the search.
Meanwhile the Resistance tries to reassemble the remaining forces of the Republic and gather new allies to make a stand against the New Order. Poe and Finn gather folowers all around the galaxy, but Rey is hunted down by the Knights of Ren and drawn to the dark side by the members of the Circle. Kylo finally manages to find a way to the world between worlds and, fulfilling history, pulles Luke from Ahch-To. Being cut off time and space inside the world between worlds the enchantment of the Circle breaks and Luke finally regains his own true self. They reconcile and head out to help their friends.
With the existence of the Circle of Ren finally revealed the Resistance plans an attack on the shipyards on Ren. Poe and Finn lead the asault on the shipyards, Luke faces the Circle of Ren, Kylo and his friends (Ahsoka, Ezra, Maz Kanata...) face the Knights of Ren and their new recruit Rey. During the battle Kylo manages to restore Rey´s memories and they manage to overpower the Knights and the Circle of Ren. With their leadership gone the New Order is defeated and the shipyards are destroyed.
In a post-credit scene we might see the caretaker of the Circle of Ren going into hiding taking Sith-artifacts and holocrons with him to rebuild the Sith-order.
